Halal — What Does It Mean

Halal (حلال) — «permitted» in Islam. In the context of food — a system of rules for preparing and consuming products.

What is forbidden (haram)

  • Pork and any derivatives
  • Alcohol — even in sauces and desserts
  • Meat of animals not slaughtered according to canon
  • Blood and carrion

Slaughter rules (zabh)

  1. Sharp knife
  2. Allah's name at slaughter (بسم الله الله أكبر)
  3. One confident cut — three blood vessels
  4. Complete blood drainage

In Chechnya, 97% of restaurants operate halal — even without explicit certification. Pork in regular stores is absent or sold in separate sections.

What it means for tourists

  • All restaurants = halal by default
  • Alcohol — in special stores, limited hours (8:00–10:00)
  • Seafood — allowed (fish, shrimp)
  • Dairy — no questions

Tip: if you're fasting (Lent, Ramadan) — vegetarian options are in every restaurant.
