History
Shatoy Towers
Shatoy Towers
A complex of medieval stone towers in the mountainous part of Chechnya. Built in the 12th–15th centuries.
Tower types
- Battle towers (bau) — 5 tiers, up to 25 m tall
- Residential towers (gala) — 3 tiers, for family living
- Semi-battle towers — mixed purpose
Uniqueness
The towers are built without mortar — stones are perfectly fitted to each other. This technology was passed down through generations and is partially lost today.
Some towers have stood for over 700 years and remain earthquake-resistant.
