Vainakh Tower Architecture
Vainakh towers are a unique phenomenon in world architecture. There are over 500 in Chechnya alone.
Tower types
Battle towers (bau)
- 5 tiers
- Up to 25 meters tall
- Wall thickness at base — 1.5 meters
- Narrow loopholes around the perimeter
Residential towers (gala)
- 3 tiers
- Lower — for livestock
- Middle — living quarters
- Upper — storeroom or watchpost
Semi-battle towers
- Mixed purpose
- Living quarters + defense
Construction technology
Towers are built without mortar — stones perfectly fit each other. This technology was passed from generation to generation and is partially lost today.
Construction stages:
- Site selection — on rocky foundation
- Foundation laying — cuboid blocks
- Walls erected with inward slope (5-7°)
- Coverings from large slabs
- Completion with conical or pyramidal roof
