Zikr in the Sufi Tradition
Zikr — Ritual Remembrance of Allah
In Chechen Islam, zikr is a central spiritual practice. Most believers belong to two Sufi tariqas: Naqshbandiyya and Qadiriyya.
Types of zikr
- Silent zikr (khafi) — internal recitation of Allah's names in the heart
- Loud zikr (jahri) — collective recitation, with swaying
Loud zikr of Qadiriyya
Most recognizable — circular zikr of the Qadiri tariqa:
- Men stand in a circle
- Recite
La ilaha illallah - Sway in rhythm
- Tempo gradually accelerates
Zikr is accompanied by special breath control and may last from 15 minutes to several hours.
