Chechen Adat Traditions
Adat — The Foundation of Chechen Culture
Adat refers to a code of unwritten laws and behavioral rules shaped over centuries. They govern all aspects of Chechen society: from family relations to hospitality.
Hospitality (khoshalla)
One of the most important Chechen traditions. A guest in the house is considered a messenger of God.
«Khasha — Delan elcha» — «A guest is a messenger of Allah».
The host must:
- Provide the guest with the best seat
- Serve the best food
- Protect the guest at any cost
- Not ask about the purpose of the visit for the first three days
Respect for elders
Reverence for elders is a fundamental principle. The younger:
- Stand when an elder enters
- Give up their seat
- Do not interrupt
- Do not smoke or drink in presence of elders
Blood feud (chir)
Ancient justice mechanism. Now regulated by reconciliation commissions.
| Stage | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Appeal to the reconciliation commission |
| 2 | Meeting of taips |
| 3 | Forgiveness or compensation |
